It's
time for your family to plan a winter vacation. Since you live in the
state of Illinois, your parents have decided a car trip around Illinois is the
perfect way to get to know your state and see all the sights. You, of
course, want to make sure that the trip includes places you want to see and
things you want to do. The problem is, everyone else wants a say in
deciding what places to visit, too. Help your family plan a fun-filled
and interesting vacation.
Your
job is to plan an Illinois vacation with your family. You and your team
members must decide where to visit on your vacation. Keep in mind
the interests of everyone involved. Click on the following family links
to get to know your family members a little better.
The
state flower of Illinois – the violet.
PROCESS
Part 1: The Research
1.
Your teacher will help you form a group of 4 or 5 team members. Each team
member takes on the identity of one of the family members. If your group
has only 4 members, one family member identity will be researched as a
group.
2.
After deciding who will be which family member, team members research that
person's interests by using the resource links you see after the paragraphs.
Choose 1 or 2 places in Illinois that you would like to visit.
3.
Write 1-2 paragraphs about your family member's choice. If there is time,
paragraphs should be keyboarded on the computer.
Paragraphs should answer the following:
a.
What is the name of the
place you would like to visit?
b. Why
did you choose to visit this particular place?
Include interesting facts.
c. Why is this place important to the state of Illinois?
4.
Come back together as a group. Share the information you found with the
rest of your family. Begin thinking about how to map out the actual trip.
Part 2: Mapping Out the Trip
1.
Your teacher will give you a road map of the state of Illinois.
Working with your 'family members', decide which places you are visiting on
this trip. Find them on the map.
2.
The starting location for your vacation will be your school address.
Looking at the map, decide in what order you will visit each
location. Make it the most logical order you can. Write down
each location and number the order in which you are visiting each place.
3.
Go to Mapquest. Type in your
school address, 1111 Everett School Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045 for the
starting address and the address of the first stop on your trip. TIP – Put in the name
of the city, state and/or the zip code. Print the map.
4.
Now type in the address of the first stop as the starting place and the address
of the second stop as your ending place. Print that page.
5.
Keep entering location addresses and printing the maps. Remember,
the last stop of the previous map becomes the starting address for the next
map.
4.
Don't forget to create a map from the last stop back to home.
Part 3: The Final Activity
You
will complete this activity with your group:
As
a final activity, you must present your road trip project to the rest of the
class. The project will include the maps you printed from Mapquest, the written paragraphs from your
research, and a group presentation.
